Find a Soul Mate in the Comal Cemetery

Posted on: October 14th, 2013 by admin No Comments

An actor explains his real-life character's life and death during a past "Soul Searching" tour at the Comal Cemetery.

The New Braunfels Park and Recreation Department is sponsoring its third annual “Soul Searching … Night Ramblings at the Comal Cemetery” Oct. 18-19. Come and experience the historic Comal Cemetery in a unique fashion with a guided evening tour.

Established in 1868, the Comal Cemetery is the burial ground for some of New Braunfels’ founders and notable citizens. Come and hear the stories of these illustrious souls told by actors as living history portrayals. The setting is somber but not meant to be scary.

This year’s tour will feature the lives of 18 orphans who were raised by New Braunfels pioneers, a Rev. Ervendberg and his wife, after the childrens’ parents died in an epidemic.

Tours start at 6:30 p.m. both nights. The last tour begins at 9:30 p.m. Each participant will be given a flashlight to help see in the dark. A full moon both nights will help illuminate the cemetery.

An early tour (5:30 p.m.) is for individuals that need assistance; they will be driven in a six-passenger golf cart. The 5:30 version is not a walking tour.

Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased by calling the Parks and Recreation Department at (830) 221-4350.

Gruene Music & Wine Festival Nears

Posted on: October 6th, 2013 by admin No Comments

We can’t overstate the popularity of this week’s Gruene Music & Wine Festival that runs from Oct. 10-13 at the Gruene Historical District in New Braunfels, just 6.8 miles from our campground.

Organizers of this 27th annual event assign the proceeds to United Way of Comal County and have set a goal of topping $100,000! That goal is obtainable (more than $125,000 was raised last year) and the festival appeals to a broad spectrum of music.

Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell

Live music on Thursday features Acoustic Jungle; on Friday (for which general admission tickets are already sold out but reserved tables remain available) it’s Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell; Saturday performers include Poor J. Brown, the Jeff Strahan Band, the Danny Brooks Band and Walt Wilkins & the Mystiqueros; and on Sunday it’s Gospel Brunch With A Texas Twist.

All featured wines will be available by the glass, bottle or case during that day’s event and at The Grapevine (one of the event sponsors), while supplies last. Friday’s and Saturday’s featured wines will also be available for purchase on festival grounds during Sunday’s event, which supplies last.

Plan to Attend Gruene Music & Wine Festival

Posted on: October 1st, 2013 by admin No Comments

Some revelers at a past Gruene Music & Wine Festival

Don’t miss the musical highlight of the year – The Gruene Music & Wine Festival Oct. 10-13 in the Gruene Historical District in New Braunfels.

This festival features four distinct events over the course of four days.

Background

The Fest began as a one-day event in 1987 with the purpose of promoting Texas and Americana music in a fun and relaxed setting while raising funds for the United Way of Comal County. Over the years, it has become a four-day celebration not only of Texas and Americana music, but also a celebration of Texas, German and New World wines, specialty beer, food and handcrafted items.

The event continues to grow each year. In recent years sponsors have been able to expand the “Texas Tasting & Tunes” event on Saturday to include over 40 wine & food producers for tastings and “Le Cordon Gruene,” a mini food truck park. To further advance Sunday’s “Texas Style Musicfest,” they have added a “Brew-n-Que” event with specialty beer tastings and barbecue, a second stage and the big game on two big screen TVs.

A Craft Market has also been added to both Saturday and Sunday events. In 2010, an entirely new “Not From Texas” kickoff event was added on Thursday featuring German and New World wines, live music and “Not From Texas” door prizes.

Last year the event raised a record-breaking sum of $125,199.32!

Event sponsors are Gruene Hall and 92.1 Radio, New Braunfels.

Comedy Nightspot in New Braunfels

Posted on: September 27th, 2013 by admin No Comments

Logo says it all about Tripp's Comedy Club

Now you have another reason to visit the Hill Country RV Resort & Cottage Rentals – Tripp’s Ultimate Comedy Club/Humor Bar in New Braunfels.

This nightspot opened in August in the basement of the old New Braunfels City Hall, former location of Liberty Bistro. The address is 200 N. Seguin Ave.

The comedy club’s primary owner and a former comedian himself, Tripp Marsalis, told the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung that he hopes his venture shatters some accepted ideas of date night.

“I’m looking for the couples. Get a babysitter and come out,” he implored. “We’re looking for (people in their) upper 30s, 40s and 50s looking for a place to go. There are only so many times you can go to the movies and Applebee’s.”

Marsalis said he hopes to offer a different type of club in New Braunfels.

Marsalis also plans to hold comedy workshops for those interested in learning the craft. He will give them pointers on presenting a winning comedic performance and then hold a comedy showcase for the “students” to show off what they learned.

He also hopes to open his kitchen in a few weeks, eventually serving food and even delivering meals, joke included. The goal is to bring a pleasant, new experience to New Braunfels at reasonable prices with a smile.

A promotion for the current headlining comedy act at Tripp's.

“I opened this because I love live comedy,” he said. “There’s no experience like it.”

For information about Tripp’s Ultimate Comedy Club and Humor Bar, call (830) 629-2774. The club is on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/Tripps-Ultimate-Comedy-ClubHumor-Bar.

Thanks to the Herald-Zeitung for the above information.

Wurstfest Brings the Old Country to the Hill Country

Posted on: September 19th, 2013 by admin No Comments

Since 1961, New Braunfels has been home to one of the biggest and best events in the state of Texas. The annual Wurstfest festival offers a unique blend of German heritage and Texan fun! It’s an opportunity for folks from far and wide to come together for great food, good beer and live entertainment from over 40 local, national and international performers.

10 days of Unrivaled Fun

Traditional German costumes, crafts, souvenirs, and delicacies rule the day in this Texas-style Oktoberfest. From carnival rides to polkas to sausage on a stick, there’s something here for everyone. Located on the spacious family-friendly and accessible Wurstfest grounds, the festival begins every year on the first Friday in November and runs for 10 days. This year, the fun will be raging from Friday, Nov. 1, through Sunday, Nov. 10. Several corresponding community events also spring up during that same time throughout New Braunfels.

Big Event for a Big State

Begun as a promotional event for the city’s sausage-making industry, Wurstfest has exploded into one of the largest and most exciting cultural events in the country. Fifty-two years after its humble beginning, Wurstfest is better than ever and was recently rated the No. 3 event in the state of Texas, behind only San Antonio’s annual Fiesta celebration and the Texas State Fair.

Thanks to Jason Braun for this informative look at Wurstfest.

Plan now to attend this event.

Where are you going to stay while enjoying Wurstfest? Where else but Hill Country RV Resort & Cottage Rentals. Call (830) 625-1919 now to reserve your spot. Keep checking the blog and visit our website for more information about the resort, local attractions, news, events and more.
