Visit The Sophienburg in New Braunfels

The Sophienburg in New Braunfels

The Sophienburg is one of the top attractions in New Braunfels, according to the reviewers at TripAdvisor.

This tiny but thoroughly informative museum covers the history of the founding of New Braunfels and the life and customs of the early settlers. This town is proud of its German heritage and this museum is proof of that.

The Sophie shop (located inside the museum building) has rare Christmas tree ornaments with a German twist (most of them glass and very high quality), e.g. a milkmaid in German fold dress.

Background

In 1844 Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels and a group of emigrants set out from Germany to start a colony in the Republic of Texas. The prince chose a site on the Comal River because of its abundant water, lush vegetation and “a good omen.” On March 21, 1845, he and his band of pioneers founded New Braunfels, named for his hometown in Germany.

Prince Carl chose a hill overlooking the beginnings of the town and began his plan to build a castle on the site. His home was to be called Sophienburg(Sophie’s Castle) for his fiancée, Lady Sophia, Princess of Salm-Salm. He returned to Germany to bring Sophia to Texas, but she refused to leave. Prince Carl chose his fiancée over Texas and stayed in Germany to marry Sophia. He never returned to Texas. Today the Sophienburg Museum and Archives stands on the hill chosen long ago by Prince Carl.

A special exhibit of Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm is on display through May at The Sophienburg.

Enjoy Our New Website!

Have you noticed?

Hill Country, A Cottage & RV Resort has a newly redesigned website.

“We really wanted to gear the website to online reservations,” said Brad Pemberton, general manager of the resort. Hill Country has more than 270 RV sites and 65 park model and other rental accommodations, with another 15 park model cottages to be added by spring. It’s one of the largest providers of park model accommodations in the Sunbelt.

The mobile-device-friendly site has also been simplified so that campers can quickly find the prices of the RV sites or park model accommodations of interest to them.

TXAD Internet Services redesigned the site.

Chris Brailsford, senior web developer for TXAD Internet Services, said the new website is also more modern and “resort-like” in appearance and includes new information on the resort’s ability to accommodate large groups, such as family reunions, parties, rallies and corporate retreats, which was not on the website before.

In addition to creating a slider of large images on the home page, TXAD Internet Services rearranged much of the website’s content, consolidating information on all of the cottages onto a single descriptive page, and using drop-down navigation tabs to free up space.

About the Cottages

The resort’s park model cottages come in a variety of styles and sleep between two and 10 people. They are fully furnished and include linens, towels, kitchen utensils and a flat-screen TV with DVD player. Each cottage also has an attached deck or patio with chairs, a barbecue grill and picnic table. The resort’s RV sites also include big-rig-friendly sites.

Other resort amenities include two indoor heated pools and hot tubs, a fitness facility, a jumping pillow, a jumping pad, a game room with air hockey, foosball as well as video games, fenced dog walk areas and kitchen facilities for use by large groups.

An outdoor swimming pool is also coming soon to the resort.
