Guadalupe River: Spring Break Destination in Texas Hill Country

If you’re coming to the Texas Hill Country for Spring Break, be mindful of the River Road that runs along the Guadalupe River between New Braunfels and Canyon Lake.

The River Road is a 20-mile winding road that takes you to most all the river outfitters in the area. There are plenty of free places to launch tubes, canoes or just swim, but parking is difficult in peak season so beware of private property. The river drive is extremely scenic, such lush greenery and little tumbling overflows into the main river, it’s lovely to just pull over and enjoy the sounds.

About the Guadalupe River

The Upper Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country is a smaller, faster stream with limestone banks and shaded by pecan and bald cypress trees. The upper Guadalupe is popular as a tubing destination where recreational users often float down the river on inflated tire inner tubes during the spring and summer months. East of Boerne, on the border of Kendall County and Comal County, the river flows through Guadalupe River State Park, one of the more popular tubing areas along the river.

The lower river begins at the outlet of Canyon Lake, west of New Braunfels. The section between Canyon Dam and New Braunfels is the most heavily used in terms of recreation. When the water is flowing at less than 1,000 cubic feet per second (cft/s), there could be hundreds if not thousands of tubes on this stretch of the river. At flows greater than 1,000 cu ft/s, there should be very few tubes on the water. Flows greater than 1,000 cu ft/s and less than 2,500 cu ft/s are ideal for rafting and paddling.

The Canyon Dam controls the flow. So does the amount of rainfall the area has received. The Comal River joins the Guadalupe in New Braunfels and the San Marcos joins it about two miles west of Gonzales on way to the Gulf of Mexico.

Background

Texas Independence Day is the celebration of the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. With this document, settlers in Mexican Texas officially broke from Mexico, creating the Republic of Texas. Fifty days later, Gen. Sam Houston led the Texian Army in a decisive victory over the Mexican army led by Gen. Santa Anna in the Battle of San Jacinto. A subsequent peace treaty paved the way for Texas to become an independent country.

About B.J.

Born Billy Joe “B.J.” Thomas on Aug. 7, 1942 in Hugo, Okla., Thomas graduated from Lamar High School in Rosenberg and began singing in a local group called The Triumphs. Together they released ‘I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” a cover of the Hank Williams song. The album sold over a million copies in 1966 and launched Thomas’ career.

His next single, “Hooked on a Feeling,” also sold a million copies. In 1970, his song “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head” was used in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” giving Thomas his third consecutive million selling record. In 1975 he released “Hey Won’t You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song,” which is the longest titled song to reach the No. 1 position on the Billboard charts.

His string of hits continued into the ‘80s with such classics as “Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Love” and “New Looks from an Old Lover.” To date, Thomas has sold over 70 million records and shows no sign of slowing down.
